Jason was recommended to take part in New Directions by Links to Work, and found its hands-on practical approach suited him well. New Directions is a fully funded programme delivered by BCHA which aims to help people find work in growth employment sectors like engineering, manufacturing and production.

“I was building myself up after a life breakdown. I took a year out and worked really hard to deal with my mental health. I never felt like I was moving on – but now thanks to New Directions I feel I’ve come a long way.

“The practical workshops opened my eyes to a lot more and I enjoyed all the technical skills provided. I really enjoyed team building at The Factory, and the New Leaf allotments.

“Eagle Lab was a great opportunity and thanks to that I’ve become more interested in programming, technical drawing, 3D printing and modelling things out of wood. In the workshops I learned how 3D printers work and I am looking to take that knowledge further.

“It goes to show what you can achieve with the right help and support.”

“I worked with the New Directions team to overcome issues I had with my CV – one-to-one sessions with Eloise and Charlie and my tutoring by Nicole and the Ignite team helped. The result is a more professional CV.

“New Directions have been very supportive. Now I plan to become a volunteer at Life Works and the allotment in my free time, and I’m also looking out for other opportunities for improvement.

“I believe New Directions has given me the best chance possible to obtain work and achieve some of my goals.

“My goal for the future is a happy, stable family life – I see that it is achievable but I have to work on it. I know my future is about finding balance amid the chaos and disorder.”

Jason’s piece of advice for changemaking:

“Thanks to New Directions I have a clear direction and life is not as murky. Between sessions I recognised my perception changing – and realised that I am good enough.”
